Wasnt H200 chips already open for China to purchase a long time ago? But China just didnt want to buy it because they want to support their own development of those chips.

I believe you’re thinking of the inferior H20, not the H200.

Thanks for the clarification

Xi wont let them buy. But this doesn't matter to them as they are using more advanced models for training overseas. For inference, the domestic ones are cheaper and good enough.

If DT let Xi having Taiwan, they will be buying h200 like using blank checks.

China doesn't care about it, the big bargaining chip is the dutch asml lithography machines currently ban from export to china.

China is pushing for Chinese GPU via Huawei, biren, Alibaba, cambricon, baidu.

The big constraints is on smic to have enough capacity to produce GPU for them.

This is the biggesr negotiation point. Asml machine against Boeing order and allowing US banks in china.

H200 is much more effective than anything Huawei produces. At least in the short term.

But as Alibaba said in their conference call, the large AI investment window is likely only the next 2-3 years so the short term is actually what matters.

Right now its beyond efficacy of GPU, it's about strategic economy of a country.

Chinese government looks beyond 5years.

Deepseek has proven training and inference on Chinese GPU is possible, Deepseek is 20 cheaper than Google or Anthropic.

What's important is the 7-5nn lithography for smic.
