Thinking of buying a NIO car instead of a Volvo XC60, but...
European buyer hesitates to buy NIO over Volvo XC60 due to lack of local service in Spain and narrower vehicle dimensions.
- Demonstrates active consumer consideration for NIO vehicles among European buyers.
- Lack of local service infrastructure in Spain poses a significant hurdle for European expansion.
- NIO's vehicle dimensions are perceived as too narrow compared to established mid-size SUVs like the Volvo XC60.
I have some concerns.
For one, NIO is still not available in Spain. Not a big deal in terms of purchasing it, as I think I can buy and export it from Germany. A bit of hassle, but not too much. The main issue though is servicing. As NIO doesn't have a presence here, and I have to take the car in for service, then what? I'm certainly not driving to Germany.
The other issue is the width of the car. I want to upgrade to a Volvo XC60 because my current car is a bit too small now, both in terms of width and length. Need something bigger. But I'm looking at all the NIO options and, unless I'm mistaken, they're all narrower than the XC60 (which is a mid-size SUV). Even the ET9 is 10cm narrower than the XC60, which doesn't sound like a lot, but every milimeter helps!
What do you guys think? Am I looking at this the wrong way?
i love my Nio ET5, which has been flawless, but nobody should be buying a car in a country where it's not officially supported. it opens the door to tons of headaches.
just get something officially available in Spain.
You can’t buy an ET9 or the new ES8 or ES9 in Europe.
You can buy the old (2nd Gen) EL8 or EL6/7 in Europe.
I‘m also heavily interested in Nio and would immediately buy the new ES8 or ES9. But I don’t think that we‘ll get these in Europe any time soon.
In the meantime, Zeekr 7X is a solid alternative. I‘d take this over the Volvo any day (same base company by the way.. you also get the Polestar mirrors..).
You allready have Nio in Portugal, you can save a few miles/km.
Seems prices are available for some models in Portugal: https://nio-portugal.pt/
They are all wider than the XC60 i think you are looking the XC60 with mirros and the NIOs without mirrors. If you compare them both without mirrors:
XC60 = 1902
ET7 = 1987 (Just used ET7, to my knowledge they are all the same due to their battery platform).
As for service, no clue what to expect en Spain.
You are right, i was looking at the mirrors-out width, which is 2117mm. But the mirrors folded in width is 1999mm.
Why down vote? Am i wrong to think Nio works better in a place where they have the battery changing stations? I guess it can work without those but why then pay premium? pls tell me.
Could check out Zeekr & BYD. Not trying to push you out of a Nio but get something officially in your country with its dealer rather than it being a pain in the a$$ when you run into issues with the Nio.
EV’s don’t need a lot of servicing and Nio will be happy to help you with that.
Asså du behöver vänta på nya ES8 elle4 ES9 men vem vet när de bilarna blir tillgängliga
Considering the situation in the countries where NIO officially operates, this is unlikely to happen anytime soon — not to mention the availability of Power Swap stations for these vehicles.
The main issue is that the new NIO models have switched to 900-volt batteries and use NIO’s own proprietary chips. Given the significant lag in software development for European NIO vehicles, I think NIO may not introduce its new models to the European market in the foreseeable future.
See, i did the smart move here, bought the car instead of the stock. Celebrating early!

I own ES8 since 2019 (their first car), driving that one for around 120k km, and ES8 2026 this one has 6k only so that doesn't count. Drove all of their models and versions except ES9, will schedule a test drive in a week or two when I have a bit more time.
What are you looking to buy? Ask anything
I thought Nio were operating in Portugal, no?
