thinking about customizing ebikes for resale

Investor summaryNeutral

User seeks advice on sourcing custom ebikes from Alibaba suppliers for resale, focusing on quality control and profitability.

Post body

Has anyone here customized electric bikes through Alibaba suppliers for resale? I have been researching suppliers that offer custom branding, frame colors, battery options, and packaging for people trying to start a small ebike business. Some of the prices seem affordable, but I am still unsure how reliable the customization process really is.

My biggest concern is quality control and whether the bikes actually arrive looking and performing like the samples and photos shown online. I am also wondering how difficult it is to communicate changes with suppliers during production.

For people who have done this before, was it profitable, and what beginner mistakes should I avoid?

I'd say the idea of customizing ebikes for resale is great. However, you will need to control components very well; Alibaba sourcing will help with lower costs, but quality checks on your end become critical thing.

the biggest issue is that sample bikes often get extra attention, so bulk production can have paint, battery, or wiring inconsistencies if you skip a pre-shipment inspection (usually around $300). real factories will send you photos of their production floor and let you talk to their QC officer, while trading companies just show catalog images. MOQ is usually negotiable for a pilot run, but insist on a sample order and make sure any compliance reports (like for CE or UL) actually name the testing lab. clear, written change requests are essential during production, since verbal tweaks usually get lost.

for what it's worth, my AI sourcing agent SAM crawls 40k+ chinese suppliers in 120+ product lines, checks their registration and export filings, compares prices to the market median, and flags any reputation issues on socials or trade forums. you can see how it works at agenceocto.com.

The customization is too expensive and might be beyond our affordability.

I live in a major city and I am cyclist. I can see many brands and most of them come and go. Unless you already have a physical cyclist related store, you will be getting white label bikes which can be branded with a sticker of your logo.

Obviously you can customise to particular parts, but kinda no point. It is already great selection.

I am in talks with one manufacturer to get few bikes for family use and seen catalogues.

£5-6k bikes from main brands or their equivalent of MTB e bike would be $1.2 EXW.

You would need to double check about tarrifs as somehow I found out that EU and UK have high tariff for some reason for bicycle and parts

I have an e-bike factory in Pingdingshan, China. Customization is available.

my main concern would be how to handle the liability. it will be difficult to find an insurance that will Cindy that risk.
