Tried a few local sourcing platforms again recently just to compare prices and shipping.

Investor summaryBullish

User prefers Alibaba over local sourcing platforms due to transparency, supplier verification, and reliable after-sales support.

Bull points
  • High transparency with factory videos and supplier metrics builds strong buyer trust.
  • Reliable after-sales support and dispute resolution, such as fast reshipments for transit issues.
  • Maintains a competitive edge in overall reliability compared to alternative local sourcing platforms.
Bear points
  • The platform is not perfect and still requires buyers to carefully filter and vet suppliers.

But honestly I think I’m still sticking with Alibaba.

Main reason is transparency. I like that you can actually see factory videos, past orders, response rates, and how long suppliers have been active. Makes it feel less random.

Last month one of my shipments got messed up during transit. I was already preparing for a long argument lol. But the supplier just handled it through the platform and resent the order pretty fast.

That kind of after sales support is honestly hard to find elsewhere from my experience.

Alibaba definitely isn’t perfect and you still need to filter suppliers carefully, but compared to some other platforms I’ve tested lately, it still feels the most reliable overall.

Hello, I'm from China. From what I know about Alibaba, it is undoubtedly the best choice if you prioritize security and convenience. However, if you want to source products at lower prices, you’ll need to come to China in person to find manufacturers.

There is a reason why suppliers on Alibaba charge higher prices. My company had an Alibaba store for a whole year. The advertising costs on the platform are extremely high, so I had to raise product prices to maintain a normal profit margin.

Regarding suppliers, I think I can help you. I come from mainland China and can assist you in purchasing Chinese goods. I can send you products from different factories for you to choose the most suitable one. I will take care of the procurement and transportation. dm me if you need

I tried a couple local sourcing platforms too and kept running into slow replies and vague pricing. Alibaba at least gives me enough supplier history and transaction context to judge who I’m actually dealing with.

The issue is a lot of sourcing agencies charge too little, take on too many clients and as a result, service quality falls fast. That is why we as a sourcing agency have minimum order values - one client doing $10,000 USD is much more logical than ten clients doing an order of $1000 USD each.

A lot of the videos you refer to are "directed" to portray a setting and if you watch carefully a lot will say in small writing that it is an "associate factory" which means a suppliers supplier, usually not the actual company you are working with. So while they can be good, sometimes they are not a realistic depiction and require you to go in person. One thing we offer our clients when visiting a factory/supplier is taking photos and videos.

Also, Alibaba transaction data only shows data of what has gone via the Alibaba site, majority of real importers do not use Alibaba as it decreases margins. So if a supplier has low orders on Alibaba it is not necessarily a red flag. We know plenty of factories which do not use Alibaba at all.
