Potential scam?

Investor summaryNeutral

User asks if an Alibaba seller offering a low price for Insta360 X4 but demanding off-platform payment is a scam.

Post body

Hi, I contacted a seller on Alibaba regarding the Insta360 X4, and he offered me a really low price of $230. However, this price is only available if I pay outside of Alibaba using one of these options:

The payment methods we support are as follows:

(Alipay)

(WeChat Pay)

(Western Union)

(Paysend)

(Remitly)

(Skrill)

(Zen)

(Chime)

(Cash App)

(Ria Money Transfer)

Is this legit?

No it’s a scam. Tell them you will pay in cash since you’re a pilot with free flights. Watch the lies fly.

Alibaba is a scam; payment through Alibaba Trade Assurance is also a scam. Never buy anything from Alibaba. The majority of the women trading on Alibaba are scammers; the pictures on the profile page are fake.

I am Chinese, I help you in China's shopping software to see, this brand is now in China's retail price of $410, he gave you a price of $230, either second-hand, or fraud....

In addition, I helped you look at the second-hand market in China, and the price he gave you is in line with the price of the second-hand market in China. ...

Just one thing: even in China, I can’t get Insta360 X4 at such a low price, so how could you possibly find it?

This is almost certainly a scam. Legitimate sellers on Alibaba don't ask you to pay outside the platform. Alibaba's payment system exists specifically to protect buyers, and bypassing it removes all of those protections.

If someone is asking you to use services like Remitly, Western Union, Cash App, or anything similar to pay for goods from a stranger online, that's a major red flag. These transfers are usually very hard to reverse once sent, which is exactly why scammers like to use them.

We'd highly advise against going outside of Alibaba's payment system. If a deal seems too good to be true, it usually is.

that price is way below market median for the insta360 x4, which almost always means fake or grey market stock. asking you to pay off-platform is a classic scam move, since you lose all buyer protection and recourse. legit suppliers for branded electronics will only use Alibaba-secured payment or bank transfer to a verified business account. if the seller claims they're a manufacturer, check their business scope, real factories never offer everything under the sun.

fwiw, you get a vetted shortlist and instant price checks against market medians with my AI sourcing agent SAM, which pulls from 40k+ chinese suppliers covering 120+ categories and screens each against business registries and export records. you can see more details at agenceocto.com.

That payment pressure and switching details would make me pause too. On Alibaba, I only continue when supplier info, trade assurance, and company records line up exactly with previous communication.

hello,as someone from China working in freight or trade field, just want to share practical point. Alibaba Trade Assurance is actually designed to protect buyers .but sellers usually need to pay deposits and accept platform rules to trade there.Once you move payment outside the platform, you basically lose all protection from Alibaba, and there is no way to recover funds if something goes wrong. therefore, unless it is fully processed under Alibaba Trade Assurance, I would strongly recommend staying on platform for safety.
