Sourcing women's leather jackets

Investor summaryNeutral

User seeks advice on sourcing women's leather jackets from Alibaba.com for a new small business.

Post body

I want to start a small business selling women's leather jackets. I have found many suppliers on Alibaba offering real leather at very low prices. Some claim to use cowhide or lambskin while others sell genuine leather that looks good in photos but feels like plastic in person. Has anyone here sourced leather jackets from Alibaba? What questions should I ask the supplier about leather quality and thickness? Also what MOQ is typical for a small first order? I want to test the market with maybe fifty jackets, if things go the right way I shall major in it .

I work in an export trading company in China, and I used to work in a hardware factory as a sales assistant.

Here's my suggestion based on real experience:

Before bulk order, always run a small trial order first. Don't just rely on samples. Many suppliers send perfect samples but mess up the bulk.

Two common risks:

  1. The factory may delay your order because they prioritize bigger clients.
  2. Quality can drop without ongoing inspection.

My advice:

· Use the trial order to evaluate the supplier's consistency.

· For the bulk order, arrange mid-production inspections (not just final check).

This won't eliminate all risks, but it will reduce them significantly.

Your most likely not gonna find real leather in China. Thats one of those industries that is better sourced in the US

if the supplier's photos look too perfect or you see mostly stock images, it's likely a trading company rather than a real factory. always ask for the leather thickness in millimeters and whether it's full-grain cowhide or lambskin, plus request a sample to check quality since handpicked samples can differ from bulk production. for MOQ, most factories list 100+ but you can usually negotiate down to 50 if you frame it as a pilot order; anything demanding 100% payment upfront is a red flag.

Hello, I am the Chinese agent. I am in Hangzhou, China, where there is the largest clothing wholesale market in China. All are in stock, not e-commerce images. So I can directly see the leather jacket and inspect its quality. If you need, I can provide you with different samples, and I have a cooperative logistics that can deliver to your country. dm me if you need
