Are there any legitimate reasons a rep may ask if I have WhatsApp

Investor summaryNeutral

I identified the manufacture outside of alibaba, I contacted them first. After initial back and forth about specs and MOQ, they asked if I had WhatsApp

it's super common for legit factories to move convos to WhatsApp after initial email, especially once specs and MOQ are on the table. it's way faster for sending production photos or quick clarifications, and a lot of Chinese reps use it as their main work messenger with overseas clients. as long as they're not pushing for 100% upfront payment or avoiding sample orders, it's not a red flag by itself.

tangentially, you get a vetted shortlist and price sanity check from my AI sourcing agent SAM, which draws from 40k+ chinese suppliers and flags any reputation red flags in socials or export records. all the details are at agenceocto.com.

Alibaba is one marketplace. You might get frustrated and uninstall the app. At that point, having your phone number or email would be useful for maintaining contact with you.

WhatsApp is not always more convenient for Chinese suppliers. Many need a VPN to use it, and if they do not have a foreign SIM card or stable VPN access, replies can be delayed or even stop for days at a time.

Alibaba also has a mobile app, so there is no major reason key order discussions cannot stay on Alibaba. In some cases, suppliers push buyers onto WhatsApp because they want to move the transaction off Alibaba, avoid platform fees or tax issues, or make things harder if there is a dispute later.. So ask them the specific reason why yourself.

But the key issue is not just convenience. It is evidence. If you place an Alibaba order but the important product details, promises, quality requirements, or defect discussions were only on WhatsApp, Alibaba may not be able to verify them properly during a Trade Assurance dispute.

For protection, keep casual chat wherever you like, but before paying, copy the important terms back into Alibaba chat and get the supplier to confirm them there. Also get any terms and agreements into a contract which has the company stamp/seal and is sent through the chat and affixed to the order.

Gotcha, thanks for the info

You are welcome, always just plan for the worst and you will be covered, remember Alibaba may not review communication outside the platform (as it could be photoshopped etc). If you were not paying via Alibaba then it won't make much difference.

Thanks for your great post.

But as a Chinese supply chain partner, I have a different view:

The main reason for sales to ask your WhatsApp number is for better and easy communication.

1st, Alibaba app or web version is very hard to use! Also many of sales do not like Alibaba.

Will you able to share catalogs of 99M on Alibaba app?

Will you make a video call to vendors on Alibaba app?

2nd, when you and your vendor chat on Alibaba, the vendor can not see your email address or phone numbers, only an ID;

If the sales know your WhatsApp, it will makes their follow-up work more easy and efficient;

3rd, some company setup a KPI on the clients data collection, such as email address/whatsapp etc; only they get these information, then they are able to create your profile in their CRM and make your company as the sales unique clients resources.

At last, not all seller on Alibaba who asking your WhatsApp number is going to scam you in future orders. Caution is good, but we shall know all the coin have 2 sides: Chinese suppliers on Alibaba ask your WhatsApp number is very simple purpose: for better communication and better customer services.

Hope it helps. WinSourcing is a registered sourcing company and Supply chain partner based in Guangzhou with 20 year experience in sourcing from China; welcome to AMA about Sourcing China/Canton Fair/ODM/OEM/Private Label

Many suppliers use WhatsApp as a form of communication because it's easier,but remember AlIbaba can't help you a lot if the messages are in WhatsApp so you can speak about details in WhatsApp but the core details of the order do it in Alibaba,and pay in AlIbaba pay via bank if you have done multiple orders with them but that still comes with risk, take care

WhatsApp and WeChat are very common apps used to communicate in the world

On Alibaba, reps sometimes ask questions to confirm who they're dealing with, especially for higher-risk orders or custom sourcing. Usually, it's about reducing fraud or miscommunication rather than anything personal. I’ve had similar checks when negotiating bulk orders before finalizing.
