Newbie payment and supplier questions?

Investor summaryNeutral

A newbie asks for advice on choosing between two suppliers and the safety of custom payment links on Alibaba.com.

Post body

I'm about to place my first Alibaba order, so l'm hoping to get some advice from people with more experience.

I'm deciding between two suppliers:

Supplier 1

Around $150

Frame only

Purchased through Alibaba's normal cart checkout

Supplier 2

Around $266 shipped

Frame plus 3 double-sided covers

Supplier will send a custom Alibaba payment link/ quote

Supplier 2 seems like the better value, but since l'm new to Alibaba, l'm a little nervous about paying through a supplier-generated link.

If the link is still inside Alibaba and covered by Trade Assurance, is it just as safe as checking out through the cart?

Which supplier would you choose, and are there any red flags I should watch out for before placing my order?

Thank you!!

If the payment link is generated inside Alibaba and covered by Trade Assurance, it's generally the same level of protection as checking out through the cart.

As someone who works with Chinese suppliers regularly, I would pay more attention to the supplier itself than the payment link.

Before placing the order, I'd check:

How long they've been selling this product

Whether they manufacture it or resell it

Recent reviews with customer photos

Response speed and communication quality

For a first order, I usually recommend starting with a small test order even if the supplier looks legitimate. Most issues are easier to spot during the first shipment than during the supplier search process.

No matter what everyone says/recommends, Alibaba is used by individual consumers. I think that’s why so many things are available under “ready to ship”. The B2B wholesalers don’t use that, for many reasons, and my personal opinion is that the ready to ship products are always inferior quality.

For my products, I don’t pay a separate inspector or anything, but I buy a few products to sample and then do that again before I think I can rely on that supplier for real store products. (My business has very high cost items that are truly sold as MOQ 1.)

So long story short: I think the ordinary cart checkout on Ali is going to be inferior quality and/or no accountability.

But that’s just a narrow view from my niche products.

If both are genuinely under Alibaba Trade Assurance, Supplier 2 can still be safe but I’d double-check that the order is created inside Alibaba (not an external payment request) and that specs are clearly locked before paying.

As a first order, I’d personally lean toward the more “standard checkout” option unless Supplier 2 has strong verification and clear Trade Assurance coverage in writing.

It seems that yes, if you order through the seller's credit insurance, you will not be able to enjoy the discount that Alibaba gives you, only the goods ordered directly. I am a salesman of Ali

Pro-tip: I always recommend a third-party inspection before the goods leave the port. It gives you the leverage to fix quality issues while the product is still in the factory. It’s the best way to keep your account health safe and your customers happy.

I didn't know this is an option? Is there a company that I can use to coordinate this?

Search on Google like Pre-shipment inspection (PSI).

Supplier-drafted links are completely normal, especially since you are adding custom parts like those double-sided covers that don't fit the standard cart pricing.

As long as the payment link keeps you on the platform and you clearly see the Trade Assurance logo at checkout, your money is just as protected as checking out through the normal cart. I'd go with Supplier 2 if the value is better, just double-check that they have the Verified Supplier badge first.

I bought a tested supplier instead of testing them myself. Made 4.5k in a month and a half at 18 w 100 euro budget

From these details, supplier 2 gives more value, but I’d confirm the payment link stays within Alibaba’s Trade Assurance before sending money. Supplier 1 is safer via cart checkout. Personally, I’d lean towards supplier 2 only after verifying order details, shipping terms, and protection coverage.

Newbie buyers on Alibaba should always verify supplier credentials, payment terms, and trade assurance before sending funds. Start with small orders, communicate clearly, and compare multiple quotes to reduce risk. Watch for hidden shipping costs and confirm product specs in writing. Alibaba escrow-style payments help protect transactions significantly overall safer.

Alibaba is meant for B2B purchases, not personal B2C purchases.

Assume supplier 2 will send you a "Alibaba Pay" link which does not include trade assurance.

Yes, I am starting a business, which is why I was looking to order through Alibaba.

See, supplier 2 said trade assurance would apply to their pay link and made me suspicious of their legitimacy. I'm just trying to not get scammed 😩

No worries. If they create a order with a payment link then it should have Trade Assurance generally.
