Why single-item direct shipping from China is always expensive (beginner mistake)
Explains why single-item direct shipping from China is expensive and advises buyers to use consolidation to save costs.
For new buyers sourcing small items from China, I think almost everyone has experienced this:
The product is cheap, but the shipping cost is even higher than the item itself.
After testing many shipping methods over time, I fully understand why direct shipping from AliExpress or individual sellers is never cost-effective for small orders.
- Direct shipping charges standard fixed rate for every single parcel
No matter how light your item is, international shipping has a base fee for tracking, handling, and customs processing. One small parcel still counts as one full shipment.
- Individual packages have no weight discount
Shipping companies give huge discounts for consolidated heavy parcels, but zero discount for single small packets.
- Many sellers inflate shipping prices for profit
Some low-price products make money purely from shipping fees, especially lightweight items like jewelry, accessories, and small tools.
That’s why almost every long-term China buyer ends up using consolidation. Combining multiple small orders into one big shipment cuts the average shipping cost drastically.
If you’re new to China sourcing, avoid shipping one item at a time. It’s the most expensive way possible.
What’s your worst shipping cost experience so far?
How do I consolidate multiple small to medium sized shipments into one? I usually source from Alibaba and would like to know how to reduce the overall shipping cost since it cuts into profits heavily
I do this all the time to save on shipping. You need to hire a 3rd-party freight forwarder based in China. You just have all your different Verified Alibaba suppliers ship their boxes domestically to your forwarder's warehouse, and the forwarder will consolidate them into one single international shipment for you. Make sure you pay them via Trade Assurance.
This is exactly what we do as your sourcing agent. We have our own warehouse where we can consolidate all your goods. Then, we'll take a video for you to check everything. Once you confirm that everything is correct, we will repack the items and ship them out together.
If you’re dealing with multiple vendors, give Cainiao a look. Consolidation and shipping rates were way better than what I was using before, if need the referral link, can DM me.
You need to work with a freight forwarder and check if your suppliers will allow EXW. When you consolidate orders from different suppliers that generally means the suppliers export license will not be used - so if it is a large quantity and high value they may not allow it.
Shipping forwarders. I wish I had the details of the one I used, they were great. I found them on Alibaba.
They combined larger orders, small packages, bulk orders. I shipped a pallet, they did everything. I had two companies at that time one was blinds/furnishings the other was phone parts & gaming accessories.
Support was insanely good, shipping was much cheaper with the forwarder discounts.
