It should not be a surprise why NIO deliveries are continuously and significantly increasing in 2026 while the Chinese EV market is stagnant and for many brands in fact it is going down.
The reasons are quite simple for those can see the BIG PICTURE
- First of all, NIO customer base is more affluent , educated middle & upper class Chinese who are secure in their jobs and who will not be impacted by the 5 % reduction in sales tax rebate in 2026.
- has the best product mix for the largest addressable demographics looking for safe , high quality and luxurious cars.
You are an executive who want the best that money can buy, you by ET9/ES9 at $60-80K
You have the money to buy luxury but you are single, married/no kids or married/small family and you don’t like/dont need big-ass UV, then you buy ES8…
You’re in the above groups who love ES8/ES9 but you don’t quite have that kind of money nor care about the ultra fancy features, you buy respectable equivalents in ONVO L80/L90.
You’re just a typical middle class, well educated, securely employed individual, you can choose from ONVO L60, ET5,ES6 series.
And finally you’re Gen Y, Z who is still playing video games, skate boarding , and you want to own another high quality , useful toy that you can modify to all your heart’s desire (maybe even with your mom or dad’s money) you can go for a firefly at $11 K.
ONLY NIO HAS A PRODUCT MIX WHICH CAN CAPTURE THIS KIND OF VAST MARKET !…. probably a billion consumers in China ! Who gives a shit about US and European markets (until they raise the white flag as expected and tariffs are reduced to no more than 10 %)
- Last one is one of the biggest reasons not many people seems to understand; lots of talk about the battery swap as it relates to being faster than charging , more convenient than charging (no waiting outside in cold rainy weather etc etc . ). Yes, there will be batteries one day which can charge nearly at the speed of swap but keep in mind fast charging reduces battery life .
However the real benefit is not that ; it’s BaaS combined with battery swap ( also giving you a lifetime battery replacement warranty ) which reduces the upfront cost of owning a car by about 20-25%. That’s a huge saving on $40-70 K cars . NIO has made upper middle class Chinese car buyers feel like a millionaire by being able to drive cars like ES8/ES9/L80 (now I’m depressed living in Canada 😢)
So to cut a long story short; NIO is and will be the leader in its segment for the foreseeable future…. At least until current share holders sell their shares to late-comers at $50 !
With battery swap, you have the ability to upgrade the battery to the latest technology, eg solid state battery. This helps to also increase the resale value of your car. Battery swap also helps Nio to monitor and manage batteries that have reduced performance and safety. There are also other advantages of battery swap which have been mentioned by Nio.
Isn't Zeekr also up a lot this year? I prefer Nio, but Zeekr is really doing a good job in a similar market.
From EU it looks like for that price segment it's wither one or the other depending on how much one could use the swap network or one prefers the traditional car with all included in the purchasing price.
Yes , Zeeker is doing well too , but it maybe short term . They don’t have the infrastructure and foundation and market coverage like NIO to take over NIO . NIO is also making their own advanced chip now , which is 4x powerful than NVIDEA EV chips . However Zeeker will be around for a long time as well ; they also have hybrid cars Like Lynk and Co.
