Is NIO the undisputed leader in BEV sector?

I have mentioned several times in my earlier posts that based on what I had seen and heard in China, AITO is the only real competitor to NIO at their level in luxury EV category. They’re also the dominant partner in HIMA (Huawei Intelligent Mobility Alliance) accounting for about 70 % of HIMA sales.

Other alliance members are Luxeed, Stelato, Maextro, Shangjie; their pure BEV sales are insignificant.

In 2026, in terms of YoY growth rate, NIO has already surpassed XPeng , Li Auto , Zeeker (in the BEV category ) and also hot selling Xiaomi which may be stagnating due to limited demographic base they are targeting. Xiaomi Q1 2026 YoY sales are up 6.5 %, April and May 2026 sales up 28% and 7 % respectively.

In May 2026, the AITO brand delivered a total of 34,320 vehicles accounting for roughly 74% of HIMA's total 46,122 deliveries for the month.

However, here is the thing ;

NIO is already miles ahead of HIMA Alliance in BEV category. 70 % of AITO cars sold are EREV (extended range EV) with BEV sales estimated to be around 10,000 out of that 46,122 . We know popularity of hybrids is fast declining while BEV market share is increasing steadily , now accounting for 66 % of all NEV’s.

Huawei’s HIMA Alliance has delivered approximately 192,000 vehicles year-to-date in 2026 ; That’s not far from NIO’s 150,526.

I believe there is a significant potential to take away customers from HIMA as the “range anxiety” diminishes further and as those customers may want to enjoy NIO’s design, quality and product range and take advantage of BaaS option to own superior NIO cars such as ES8/ES9 at lower prices then AITO’s flagships!

NIO maybe on the cusp of surpassing the entire HIMA Alliance in all EV categories combined!
