I’ve worked on importing customized products for a few years and most of them are for those small private-label businesses. Just recently when I tried looking for higher-end manufacturers because my current supplier is struggling in meeting my customers' standard quality expectations. I already had compared few sourcing platforms and the global sources vs alibaba topic came up while I was in the middle of my research where I ran into such situations; First, one supplier stated a 500-unit MOQ and demanded a 30% deposit upfront, then, the other one offered a lower MOQ of 200 units just takes a longer production time like around 45 days, the last one where I had tried wherein I had paid around $120 for a third-party inspection before the shipment sched since I don’t wanna risk quality issues on larger orders. At this point, I figured out that supplier verification and sample quality matter rather than this marketplaces badges either profile appearance. Online a supplier can appear excellent, but the sample most times reflects a totally different situation.
One platform is not necessarily better than others, some factories do not even use them.
Focus should not just me MOQ but rather the per unit price, if factory B can do a MOQ of 200pcs but you pay the same as you would for 400pcs it is not really a saving.
There is too many variables.
Global Sources has a better manufacturer to trader ratio for high end custom work suppliers there tend to be more export experienced and their verification actually means something unlike Alibaba's Gold Supplier tier. Your instinct about samples is right that's the real filter, not platform badges.
One thing that separates genuine premium manufacturers: ask for brand references in your product category.
Real quality factories have clients they are proud of and will share them. Those who deflect that question are telling you something.
On deposits 30% upfront is standard but push for 70% balance after pre shipment inspection, not before. Protects you without being unreasonable.
Sometimes, in order to receive orders, suppliers may produce excellent samples, but when it comes to shipment, they may not strictly control the quality of the mass-produced products, leading to the situation you mentioned
