Need advice on what (if anything) to sell
User seeks advice on selling MSFT or mutual funds to pay off $10k credit card debt due to overspending.
I (26M) started a new job about a year ago and get paid relatively well for my age. However, during my move I had to drop a considerable amount on furniture/ appliances, other expenses. Admittedly, I could have been more conservative with my spending but I got cocky with my new, higher paying job which I’m now paying the price for.
I’ve racked up $10k in credit card debt. My discover card has a pretty low APR but even so, I’m really struggling to pay it down each month with my student loans, car payments, medical bills and regular day-to-day expenses. I have $40k in my portfolio, primarily split between Microsoft and two mutual funds. When my credit card balance had started to get out of control, I resolved to cut back my spending and pay it down without touching those stocks but the stress is starting to wear on me.
I’ve asked family for advice and I get mixed answers from them all. Some advise not to touch the stocks and work to pay it down, others say to sell and get the credit card taken care of ASAP. Frankly, I have no idea what I think the right call is so I’m turning to you Reddit. Should I sell and pay off the credit card? If so, what should I sell the mutual funds or the Microsoft?
(For reference, I have almost exactly $10k worth of Microsoft. The rest is mutual funds).
I know i sound stupid or arrogant and believe me, I know my situation is my own fault. But with the cost of living right now it’s very hard to cut back and save while also maintaining some semblance of a mid-20s social life.
