Am I crazy or is copper becoming one of the most obvious AI investments?

Investor summaryBullish

Author argues copper is a more obvious AI investment than chipmakers as data center power and transmission demand outpaces supply.

Bull points
  • AI data centers require massive power, which in turn requires extensive transmission lines made of copper.
  • New copper discoveries are not keeping pace with the projected future demand, creating a supply deficit.

Post body

Every day I see people arguing about NVIDIA, AMD, OpenAI, etc. But the more I read about AI infrastructure, the more I keep coming back to copper. All these data centers need power. All that power needs transmission lines. All those transmission lines need copper.

Meanwhile I keep hearing that new copper discoveries aren't exactly keeping up with future demand. Maybe I'm missing something, but it feels like everyone wants exposure to AI while ignoring the stuff that actually makes AI possible. Anyone else looking at copper or am I connecting dots that aren't really there?

They are still in business (this is not investment advice)

This is the main reason someone should invent time travel... to let Nanni know his complaint is still being read in 2026.

Be sure to turn off the power before you strip it out of the walls.

look beyond copper bro. Hyperscalers are transitioning to CPO and photonics now

Most transmission lines are made out of aluminum. That being said, copper still has its benefits in making circuit boards and other aspect of AI, but it’s not really worth chasing on its own. Copper on its own doesn’t create that much value, it has to be formed and turned into something meaningful for it to be truly worth something, that’s what AI companies or companies like NVIDIA do.

$5.1 per pound of scrap now and has been going up for a while.

Just sold some for a few hundred bucks.

Wow what an amazing connection

Would you like to know more about copper deposits ?

Yep you are nuts

uh. Transmission lines are aluminum.....

Copper is too heavy and expensive.

The analyses I've seen (sorry I don't have the links) said that the AI buildout is just a tiny part of future copper needs. Basically, AI is a non-factor however it plays out. Everybody in the world needs copper.

these types of posts are a little amusing.

there's a vast network of professionals globally who are following every intimate detail of the copper industry and copper trading.

AI won't work without electricity, so better buy GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, and Mitsubishi Power which make critical components for electric plants. In fact, better buy Duke Energy, Hydro One, China Yangtse Power and Algonquin Power that operate the power plants.
