NASDAQ futures up as US launched attacks

Investor summaryNeutral

Author questions the sudden bullish reversal in US futures following strikes on Iran, suspecting priced-in risks or insider trading.

Bull points
  • The market may have already priced in the geopolitical attack.
  • The military strikes might be more limited than initially feared.
  • Investors perceive a lower risk of further geopolitical escalation.
Bear points
  • The broader market experienced a nearly 2% drop during the regular session before the news.
  • There are suspicions of insider trading or informed positioning ahead of the official announcement.

Post body

What confuses me is not just that futures are green now. The market was already down nearly 2% during the regular session before the US strikes were announced, and even after the strikes happened, futures stayed negative for several hours. Then suddenly, sentiment flipped and futures turned solidly green. Maybe the market had already priced in the attack, maybe traders decided the strikes were more limited than feared, or maybe investors think escalation risk is lower than expected.

The 2% drop during the regular session raises the question of whether some participants were already positioned ahead of time, before the official news about the US strikes on Iran came out. What is the most reasonable explanation?

Futures are green now but I suspect they will turn red by noon. There's too many catalysts right now: Iran war, oil, many economics reports Thursday and people are still selling to make room for space x.

Everyone knows there has been no ceasefire for months, why does firing some missiles change anything?

Dead cat bounce

Broadly and realistically speaking, nothing.

On the other hand, unleashing the US military against Iranian targets might be a hastening of some end state. Maybe that is what is motivating the movement noted by OP.

If nothing else, it is a break from the never ending disruption of the status quo.

It could also be a dead cat bounce; folks buying the dip.

Especially when the market is zig zagging but I never trust the it being green after hours. I’d feel better about tomorrow if the Nasdaq was down

That means space x is gonna balloon to like 1k+ on the first day. I anit buying that. People ain't pulling out for spacex. That's like saying TSLA is a good investment

Same reason the market goes up whenever Trump says there'll be a ceasefire even though he keeps saying that and it has yet to happen.

I need to read more about how some of you guys think and invest. Before I make a choice of my own. Still. It's interesting how everyone thinks and make choices before or even after posting here.

Example, I don't do choices based on what people tell me ( I don't know a lot of good traders).

But the choices I make and do. Are based on guts and what Ive read. My fort is anything that has to do on PC, Gaming, CPU, etc. I live in PR so Im betting on NFE hoping it goes up a lot. Im loosing now. But I'm sitting here hoping it goes up like it did until its max.
