Alibaba Customer Service Scam PSA

Investor summaryBearish

User warns about Alibaba.com's poor dispute resolution after being scammed by a seller and denied a full refund.

Bear points
  • Alibaba.com's dispute resolution heavily favors merchants, leaving buyers vulnerable to scams.
  • Customer support offers inadequate, non-guaranteed partial refunds instead of full reimbursement.
  • Lack of seller accountability and poor platform governance severely damages user trust.

==============

A couple months ago I went on Alibaba searching for a VERY specific product. I did my due diligence and questioned the listings of sellers that matched my requirements, the seller I wound up going with SWORE UP AND DOWN that their product met my requirements, however after receiving said product and processing a small test quantity, I came to find that I had been lied to and that the seller had simply blown whatever smoke up my ass they needed to in order to extract a payment from me.

“No problem!” I thought to myself, “I’ve been on the platform for MANY years with no major issue, customer service will make sure I don’t get screwed!”. So I dutifully filled out a dispute application, included screenshots from my chat with the seller of the seller lying to me, included photographs of what the EXPECTED outcome SHOULD have looked like vs. The ACTUAL outcome (which was nothing), confident that the overwhelming evidence in my favour would be all I needed to be reimbursed.

However a couple of days later they got back to me saying that they were siding with the MERCHANT because “Currently, according to the dispute rule it is difficult for us to support you on the dispute" with no explanation as to what that even means, and offer me THE POSSIBILITY of a paltry $50 refund (That’s right, a no guarantees $50 refund. I could accept it and have them turn around and deny me either way!).

“However we cherish you as our honorable customer, we want to improve your shopping experience on the platform. If you would accept a total partial refund of 50 USD, I will try to apply for $ 50  from the platform. Please understand that I cannot guarantee the result since the application process is very strict. If you accept please reply yes.

This credit reflects our gratitude for your business. Please keep this information confidential.”

Confidential, yeah, right, I’ll get right on that…

So, if you don’t want to get scammed, I’d steer WAY clear of Alibaba.com, it’s not worth the headache to save a couple bucks, just shop at Temu or AliExpress, where you actually GET what you are SOLD and if you DON’T customer service sides with YOU not the VENDOR
