Investing in R&D Is Crucial, See Li Auto's Fall
NIO's heavy R&D yields high-quality EVs and battery swaps, while Li Auto's lack of R&D leads to poor quality and a failing pure EV pivot.
- Heavy R&D investment has resulted in high-quality vehicles and a successful battery swap infrastructure.
- NIO's luxury EVs are successfully capturing market share from traditional luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes.
- NIO is well-positioned to survive the EV wars due to its strong product lineup and technological moat.
- Li Auto's historical lack of focus on R&D has led to poor product quality and safety issues, damaging public trust.
- The company failed to invest adequately in R&D for a successful pivot from EREVs to pure EVs as market preferences shift.
People who have been following the Chinese EV market for years know that 3 years ago, Li Auto was riding high. Li Auto had cracked the code on selling EREV to consumers with range anxiety, selling with volume, printing money and making profit. At the same time, Li Auto used it's position and success to mock NIO. Li Auto even engaged in black PR to suppress NIO. Rumors swirled that NIO was going bankrupt, despite NIO consistently growing every single year. Anti-NIO bears would claim that NIO foolishly spent too much on R&D, infrastructure and was burning into the ground.
Fast forward to present, Li Auto's lack of focus on R&D has led to poor quality products that have damaged public trust. Instead of NIO burning into the ground, Li Auto cars were literally bursting into flames due to poor quality control. EREV popularity is waning and Li Auto failed to invest the R&D for a successful pivot into pure EVs. The new Li Auto L8 is a good example of the poor design, poor quality and cheap feeling of Li Auto vehicles.
It might be little comfort to NIO investors who have seen NIO stock fall 63% in the past three years, but NIO fans were right all along. All the R&D has paid off in the form of cars and infrastructure that NIO can be proud of, and that the entire country of China can be proud of. 114 million battery swaps later. The NIO ES8 is a halo product dominating luxury EV sales. The NIO ES9 looks to be a halo product that will dominate ultra luxury EV sales. NIO is dominating BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi, the previous leaders in the luxury segment. It seems more likely than ever that NIO will be a survivor in the EV wars, and Li Auto will not.
